How to Get Wax out of Candle Jar?

Jul. 13, 2022

You justify buying candles by telling yourself that you will reuse the candle jars when they run out, only to find that you have left a lot of unused jars. You can actually turn that candle jar into a vase or trinket. Learn how to remove wax from a candle jar, regardless of candle jar shape or candle jar size. You don't need any special equipment or a lot of time - just a kitchen and some patience. Read on to learn how to get leftover wax out of the candle jar.

1. Freezing candle wax

Cold hardens and shrinks the wax, making it easier to remove, so use the old trick of removing wax from carpets with ice cubes. If the jar opening is narrow, use a butter knife or spoon (if your wax is soft) to break up any large pieces of wax left in the container. Place the candle in the refrigerator for a few hours or until it freezes. The wax should pop right out of the candle jars, but you can also use a butter knife to loosen it up if necessary. Scrape off any residue, then clean the container with soap and water.

2. Use boiling water

Hot water can also be used to remove the wax. Place the candle on a surface protected with a towel or newspaper. Use a butter knife or spoon to remove as much wax as possible. Pour the boiling water into the candle jar, leaving space at the top. (If your candle is made of soft wax, such as soy wax, you can use hot water that does not boil.) The boiling water will melt the wax and it will float to the top. Allow the water to cool and remove the wax. Filter the water to remove any small pieces of wax. (Do not pour the wax down the drain.) Scrape off any remaining wax and clean with soap and water.

3. Using the Oven

This method works well if you are cleaning multiple containers at the same time. Use a butter knife or spoon to scrape off as much wax as possible. Heat the oven to 180 degrees and line a rimmed baking sheet with tin foil. Place the candles upside down on the baking sheet and place the baking sheet in the oven. The wax will melt in about 15 minutes. Remove the pan and place it on a heat-safe surface. Hold the container with a towel or pot holder and wipe the inside with a paper towel. Allow the container to cool, then clean with soap and water.

4. Create a double boiler

Use a butter knife or spoon to remove as much wax as possible. Place the candle inside the pot or large metal bowl on a heat-resistant surface. (You can place a folded dish towel under the candle to keep it from moving around in the pot.) Pour boiling water into the pot around the candle, making sure the water does not enter the candle jar. Let the candle jar sit in the hot water until the wax is soft. Holding the candle jar in one hand, loosen the wax with a butter knife. Remove the candle jar from the water, remove the wax, and wash it with soap and water.
