How To Keep Burning Candles?

Jun. 09, 2022

You've just purchased a scented candle as part of your home decor that smells great and looks beautiful. And, of course, you'll want it to last. But how do you make the most of your new candle? While you may want to keep the candle burning until the last bit of soy wax, you should only safely melt the wax down to the last ½ inch. However, there are still a few tips and tricks you can use to enjoy your candle most effectively.

Typical burn times for regular size jars are between 60 and 80 hours. Our high-quality candles are made with natural vegetable waxes and are designed to provide you with the best aromatic experience. In addition, they have special scents you'll want to taste.

To get the most out of your candles, there are steps you can take to melt the wax smoothly and reduce wax waste. Use this guide to learn the best practices for burning candles so you can get more out of your new favorite scent.

First Burn

Not only do scented candles evoke memories, but did you know that candle wax actually has its own memories? Wax melts in the same way, so when you first light the wick of a candle, it's important to burn it until the liquefied wax forms a layer on the inside of the jar. You can do this by making sure to let it burn for one hour per inch of candle diameter.

Otherwise, the candle will form a "memory ring," which means the wax will not burn the entire diameter of the candle. This can lead to another candle problem called the "tunnel effect" - a hollowed-out center in the wax. While you want to avoid tunneling in order to extend the candle's burn time, if you end up with a collapsed candle, there are some solutions.

Stop the candle tunnel in its tracks

Once you notice that your candle starts to sink in the center, try one of these tips to restore the smooth wax surface of your candle.

One way to remedy the candle tunneling effect is to use tin foil. Secure a piece to the top of the candle, leaving an opening in the center above the wick. Then, light your candle and let it burn for about half an hour. When you open the foil, your candle should be as good as new.

Using a hair dryer to liquefy the taller circles of wax so they melt back into the center, or carefully cutting the sides of the "tunnel" to even out the wax, can also solve your candle dilemma. Tunneling can leave you with a lot of wasted wax, so fixing the problem as soon as you notice it is the best way to ensure an efficient burn.

Trim your wick for a steady flame

To help maintain a quality flame throughout the life of your candle, you need to trim the wick regularly. Bent or overly long wicks can cause uneven melting or flickering flames, but by trimming regularly, your candle will burn with a steady glow.

The wax base of the candle also helps to burn evenly, and our scented soy candles made from natural, non-toxic soy wax provide just that. Soy candles burn cleanly, last long, and actually capture the fragrance better than other wax varieties, making our candles both long-lasting and enjoyable. Whether you want to surround yourself with the scent of home or evoke warm memories with a nostalgic fragrance, the candles give you the perfect blend of scents while burning clear and bright.
