How Do I Clean Candle Jars?

Jun. 16, 2022

Comfort disguises itself in the form of many things, but when it comes to your home, it's hard to find a cozier item than a candle. While they are often praised for the ambiance, scent, and light they bring to a room, many candle connoisseurs don't realize the potential their favorite waxy accents have when they burn.

If your candle has come to the end of its life, you have many options to give it a second life. Whether you need a new planter or an all-purpose light for your bathroom, old candle containers can do the trick. But first, you'll need to learn the tricks to make them sparkle and shine. In this article, we will explain how to clean candle jars and how to reuse them.

How do I clean candle jars?

1. The freeze method.

This is one of the easiest ways to remove the last bit of wax from a glass jar. Place the candle in the freezer for at least an hour, then very carefully use a butter knife or spoon to pop out the remaining layers of wax. If it doesn't come out, gently break it and let the pieces fall out. After removing most of the wax, use your fingers to gently pull the wick and its holder. If it's stubborn, a pair of pliers will do the trick. Once everything is in place, use hot soapy water to remove the residue.

2. Hot water method.

If you don't have room in your refrigerator, try the hot water trick. Boil a cup of water and very carefully pour it into the candle jar. After a few minutes, the wax should pop out on its own, or you can poke it gently with a spoon or butter knife to help it come loose. Rinse with soap and hot water.

3. Remove the label.

If the jar has a label, removal is fairly quick and easy. Use mineral oil and hot soapy water to help lift the adhesive and scrape it off, or place it under a warm hair dryer for 30 seconds to a minute and peel it off.

How to reuse candle jars?

Any of these repurposing hacks don't require any DIY skills, just your newly cleaned candle containers.

1. Replant succulents

Finding the right jars can be difficult, but you've already done an approval check on your candles, so why not use those jars as succulent containers? They look stylish and if you have more than one of the same candles, they will match perfectly.

2. Organize your office supplies

If your desk looks like it was pulled out of an "I Spy" book photo, then a 10-minute organizational break is appropriate. Simply use old candle jars to store pens, paper clips, staples and all the other items that make your workspace efficient.

3. Cosmetic storage

Place an empty glass on top of your dresser or in your bathroom to provide space for jewelry, hair accessories, or lipstick. It will keep everything neat and tidy and make lost earrings a thing of the past.

4. Make a mini herb garden

There's no need to leave home to find the perfect herb garden container. Just add some soil and seeds and watch your plants - and your culinary expertise - grow. They also look sleeker (and more eco-friendly) than those basic plastic pots.

5. Enhance the ambiance of your home

Add a few rolls of fairy lights to a few empty candle jars and place them in the windows. It will add instant mood lighting, whether you're enjoying dinner for two indoors or scheduling a Saturday night movie night for the family.

6. Gift Giving

Cleaned glass containers (especially those with delicate lids) make perfect gift boxes. Layer them with chocolates and other candies and finish everything off with a shiny metal bow.
