Candles come in almost every conceivable shape and size. The following terms are used to describe common candle styles.

Taper-A slender candle - usually 6 to 18 inches tall, sometimes called a dinner candle - is designed to stand firmly upright from a candle holder.

Pillar-A freestanding candle, usually three inches or more in diameter, and one or more wicks. Despite the name, pillar or pillar candles can be round, square, hexagonal, etc. Although they can stand on their own, they must be burned in a heat-resistant candle holder.

What is soy wax?

Soy wax is a vegetable wax that comes from - you guessed it - soybeans. Most of the world's soybeans are grown and harvested in the Midwest of the United States - in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. After harvest, the beans are cleaned, crushed, hulled, and rolled into flakes, at which point the oil can be extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated (the remaining flakes are used for animal feed). The process of hydrogenating the oil changes the melting point of the oil, making it solid at room temperature and suitable for candle use.

Soy wax vs paraffin wax

In contrast, paraffin wax is derived from petroleum, coal, or oil shale. It is made by removing waxy substances from crude oil, a non-renewable resource. Paraffin wax is the most commonly used wax for candle making, mainly because it is cheaper and more readily available than soy wax. So while soy wax is made from an environmentally friendly renewable resource, paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum and is therefore not renewable.

But the advantages do not stop with the environment. Soy wax also burns more slowly than paraffin wax, which means the candle lasts longer. While all candles give off some black soot when they burn, soy wax burns cleaner and produces less soot than paraffin wax. Soya is also an excellent scent carrier, eliminating the need for chemical amplifiers to enhance the scent and ensure a balanced, authentic candle.

Votive

A small cylindrical candle, usually about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and 2 or 2 1/2 inches high, is designed to be placed in a 'cup' or votive holder to hold the liquefied wax produced by burning. votives were originally produced as white unscented candles for religious ceremonies. They are now available in a wide range of colors and scents.

Gel Candles

A clear candle made mainly from gel mineral oil or gel synthetic hydrocarbons. A 'soft' or quasi-rigid gel is poured into a container to retain the candle's shape. "Hard" gel candles have a consistency suitable for freestanding candles. Decorative wax products are often suspended within the gel candle to create a special visual effect.

Tealight-A small cylindrical-filled candle - usually about 1" in diameter and 1 1/2" high, usually poured into a metal holder.

Lamp Candle Type-An outdoor candle is made by placing 15 hours of dedication in a light-diffusing container filled with sand.
