How often Should You Flip the Reeds?

Aug. 08, 2022

Reed diffusers are a great way to relax and de-stress, as well as bring a pleasant aroma to your environment. They are a unique and very simple way to provide a wonderful long-lasting fragrance that emits a calming and familiar scent all around you while creating a unique identity for your home. In this article, we'll explain how to use reed diffusers to make your home or office smell fresh, inviting, and luxurious.

So, what is a reed diffuser?

A reed diffuser consists of a glass container, a scented oil mixture, and a handful of reeds. The reed absorbs the oil through channels and emits the scent into the air. This provides a stable, consistent, long-lasting scent.

They are safe and easy to use. In addition, they have been a source of aromatherapy with potential health benefits for thousands of years.

Reed diffusers are a convenient and long-lasting way to infuse a room with your favorite fragrance. Not only do they smell great, but they are often beautifully designed and can add an elegant, stylish ambiance to your home decor.

How Often Should You Flip The Reeds?

Flipping your reed sticks every so often provides a fresh burst of fragrance and helps prevent the reeds from getting clogged. We recommend doing this around once a week or every two weeks.

To do this, take the reeds out and put the dry end into the vessel. Do this over a sink or trash can to avoid dripping oil onto your table or furniture. Use a tissue when holding the reeds to keep your fingers from getting oily.

How to use a reed diffuser?

One of the best things about reed diffusers is that they are quick and easy to use - requiring minimal maintenance. You can fill a room with your favorite fragrance in minutes.

Here's the best way to use your new reed diffuser.

Before setting up the diffuser, place a few paper towels underneath the glass container to prevent spills. Avoid doing this on wooden or delicate surfaces, as the oil may leave stains.

If the fragrance oil comes in a separate container, the next step is to pour the oil into the container until it is about ½ to ¾ full. Do not fill it all the way to the top or it may overflow when you add the reeds. If your diffuser container is already filled with oil, skip this step.

Place the reeds in the container so that the bottom of the branches are submerged in fragrant oil. The number of reeds you add will determine how light or heavy the scent will be (we recommend starting with 6 to 8 reeds).

Give your reeds a few minutes to absorb the oil, then carefully turn them over so that the dry end is in the bottle and the saturated end is in the air.

Unfold your reeds as much as possible, allowing air to circulate between them. Allow the scent to diffuse completely for up to 24 hours.

Turn your reeds over regularly (about once a week) to keep the scent strong.

After setting it up, a reed diffuser will typically last between 1 to 6 months, depending on the amount of aroma oil in the vessel.

Whenever you want a whiff of fragrance, flip the reed sticks. Do this carefully, one by one, to avoid letting the fragrance oil drip out. We don't recommend doing this too often - every 2 to 3 days at most - as it will cause your oil to evaporate more quickly.

If you feel that the scent is too light, you can also add more reeds to your diffuser.  At BOYE, our high-quality reed diffuser uses a highly fragrant and natural perfume oil serum, which is much healthier for your family.

How to care for your reed diffuser?

Now that you know how a reed diffuser works, here are some tips to help you get the most out of your reed diffuser.

Don’t use bamboo rods. The channels in the bamboo are separated by nodes that prevent the oil from traveling all the way along with the bamboo. Use the natural reeds that come with the diffuser instead of bamboo.

If you want to increase the intensity of the scent, add more reeds to the diffuser. Keep in mind that this will mean that the oil is absorbed in a faster rate, so you will have to replace it more frequently.

Once the aroma begins to fade, flip the reeds over to expose the more saturated ends. Do this over a sink or trash can to catch any oil droplets.

If you notice that your reed diffuser is losing oil, allow it to evaporate completely before refilling. It is best to start with fresh oil rather than adding it to old oil. Wash the bottle with a little soap and water and let it dry completely (otherwise the water will disperse the oil). Then, refill the bottle with fresh oil and add new reeds.

Similarly, do not mix the fragrance oil with water to try to dilute it and make it last longer. The oil and water will separate and cause the reeds to bend.

Place your reed diffuser in an area with good air circulation, such as a high-traffic hallway, to get the most fragrance out of it.
