Why Do Different Candle Formulas and Burn Differently?

Have you ever noticed that two candles with the same size can burn very differently? One may have a larger flame, while another burns more slowly or forms a deeper melt pool.

The reason is that candle performance is influenced by several factors, including the wax, fragrance, fragrance load, wick, and container. These elements work together as a complete system, so changing even one component can affect the final burning performance.

1. Different Waxes Have Different Burning Characteristics

Different types of wax have different melting points, hardness, viscosity, and fragrance-holding abilities.

For example:

  • Soy wax generally has a relatively gentle and slower-burning profile.

  • Coconut wax is softer and can provide excellent fragrance performance, but it often requires careful wick selection.

Factors such as container diameter, depth, material, and heat dissipation can influence the development of the melt pool and the temperature of the vessel.

This means that even if the wax, fragrance, and wick remain unchanged, switching to a different container may require additional testing.

6. Why Can the Same Fragrance Perform Differently?

Even fragrances with the same scent name, such as Vanilla or Lavender, may have different formulations depending on the fragrance supplier.

Their composition, concentration, and compatibility with the wax can vary. As a result, the same fragrance category may produce different:

Testing Is the Key to Consistent Quality

Candle making is not simply a matter of combining wax, fragrance, and a wick. Professional candle development requires careful formulation and testing.

A useful way to understand candle performance is:

Wax determines the basic burning characteristics → Fragrance influences the formula → Wick controls fuel delivery and flame → Container affects heat distribution → Together, they determine the final burning performance.

For this reason, whenever the wax, fragrance, fragrance load, wick, or container is changed, a new burn test is recommended rather than simply using the original wick specification.
