Once the candle has burned out, don't throw away that glass container. Our simple method to remove wax from the candle jar will help you repurpose the container for storage, decoration, or even as a home for new candles. If you burn through your favorite scented candle quickly, throwing away the glass jar may feel wasteful. Fortunately, there are many options for used candle jars, whether you use them to make new candles, use them as small storage containers, or display them as decorative pieces.

You'll know it's time to say goodbye to candles when 1/2 inch of wax remains in the bottom of the jar. Burning a candle beyond this point can damage the container or even the surface it sits on.

Find out how to remove the wax from the candle jar using some household items and our four foolproof ways. After cleaning out the candle jar, you may need to remove any wax residue or soot left on the glass. To do this, use warm water, soap, and a dish towel or adhesive remover.

1. Remove candle wax with hot water

This method works best with wide-mouth candles. Place the used candle on a protective surface, such as a dishtowel or thermos. Boil enough water to fill the candle jar and pour it into the container, leaving an inch of space at the top. The water will melt the candle wax and cause it to float to the surface of the container.

Allow cooling completely before cleaning out the candle jar. Filter the water and any remaining candle pieces to avoid getting wax in the sink drain. Another strategy for removing the remaining wax from the candle jar is to allow the jar to soak. Put in the drain plug and fill the sink with warm water. Remove the lid and let the open jar sit in the sink for 30 minutes. The warm water will release the wax from the bottom of the container, making it easy to pull out. Please remember that this method may remove the label from the jar.

Editor's tip: Make sure that all wax residue is drained from the sink before loosening the drain plug, as wax can clog the drain.

2. Chill in the fridge

Another foolproof way to remove candle wax is to freeze it, which causes the wax to shrink. First, place the used candle jar in the fridge overnight. In the morning, take the container out of the fridge and turn it upside down - the wax pieces should pop right out. If not, use a spoon or butter knife to press down on one corner of the wax to lift and remove it.

3. Use your oven to remove the candle wax

This method allows you to remove wax from more than one candle at a time if desired. First, preheat the oven to 200°F. Line a baking tray with aluminum foil and place the used candles upside down on the foil. Place the tray in the heated oven. Keep an eye on the candles; after about 15 minutes the wax should collect on the foil. At this point, remove the baking tray from the oven and place it on a heat-resistant surface, then remove the tin using oven mitts. Allow each candle jar to cool before cleaning with soap and warm water. Once the remaining wax has dried on the baking tray, you can remove it from the foil for future use or discard it with the foil.

4. Turn on your hairdryer

Hairdryers are often used to remove candle wax from carpets. They can also be used to soften the wax in used candles to remove it. Start by holding the candle in an oven mitt. Turn on the hairdryer and use it to heat the wax from the sides and bottom of the candle. Once the wax is soft to the touch, use a butter knife to lift or scrape it out of the container.
