We have always loved the different ways we can add a beautiful scent to your home. Through a huge variety of fragrances - from the summer infusion of Royal Neroli to the luxurious golden warmth of Bourbon and Maple - and in a variety of different ways; candles, room sprays, and reed diffusers.

Reed diffusers are becoming increasingly popular as an effective alternative to other forms of home fragrance such as scented candles. Where a candle envelops your home in ascent and creates an ambiance with its golden light, reed diffusers offer a more subtle and atmospheric fragrance that you may not necessarily want from a candle.

We love reed diffusers as much as scented candles or room sprays. In this article, we want to tell you more about how to get the best from reed diffusers, some tips on how to use them, and what makes a reed diffuser an important part of your home's fragrance.

What is a reed diffuser?

A reed diffuser consists of three main components.

A small jar, bottle, or bowl, usually made of glass

A set of wooden reeds or sticks, usually seven in total

Essential oils or other liquid fragrances

The scented liquid is poured into the jar and the reeds are then placed in the jar. The ends of the reeds extend from the top of the jar into the open air. Depending on the style, the size can vary from a few inches high to over a foot.

How do diffuser bottles work?

Reed diffusers work in a very simple and effective way. The reeds are dipped into a base liquid (sometimes called a carrier) that is mixed with fragrance. The many channels inside the reeds allow the mixed liquid to be absorbed throughout the length of the reed and their porous nature diffuses the scent into the air. It's that simple and the result is a subtle scent that adds ambiance to the home.

How long do reed diffusers usually last?

A well-maintained reed diffuser made from a quality product should last for approximately one month before it needs to be refilled or replaced. With correct use and care, some versions can last up to four months. If you find that it doesn't release a pleasant scent effectively for a few days or weeks, you may need to invest in a higher-quality scent solution. Design can also be the culprit. Also, make sure you follow the maintenance advice to get the best results for the longest time.

How should you care for your reed diffuser?

This home fragrance option requires some simple but important maintenance to remain effective. Firstly, ensure that you gently swirl or stir the fragrance water solution every week. This helps to prevent the essential oils from separating and settling to the bottom, which can lead to a weakening effect. Next, turn the reeds every three to four days. This helps to keep the wood moist so that it continues to release the scented oils into the air. Finally, change the reeds once a month.
